Zack Greinke allows home run after curiously giving away pitch

Zack Greinke finally got caught.

The Houston Astros’ ace has been curiously tipping off his own pitches this postseason, and the tactic finally bit him Thursday when the Oakland Athletics’ Ramon Laureano blasted a three-run homer off of him in the second inning.

Prior to the pitch, Greinke can be clearly seen flashing two fingers to catcher Martin Maldonado, before the A’s jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in Game 4 of their ALDS series.

Greinke explained in August that the bizarre tactic was for the purpose of speeding the game up.

“I don’t like taking a long time with a man on second base, especially,” Greinke said according to the Houston Chronicle. “I’m trying to find ways to speed that up. So far this year has been good, but it got messed up today.”

At one point, the tactic devolved into Greinke actually saying his signs out loud when he got impatient during an at-bat.

Greinke allowed one earned run in four innings in his other 2020 postseason appearance. The Astros lead their ALDS series 2-1.
