Pat Sajak Rips ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Shopping Round: “Most Boring 3 Minutes on Television”

After decades of hosting Wheel of Fortune, TV veteran Pat Sajak has seen plenty of segments come and go from his gameshow, but there’s one he certainly doesn’t miss. During last night’s episode, Sajak looked back on the show’s shopping rounds with not so fond memories, slamming the segment as “the most boring three minutes of television,” TV Line reports.

“You know one of our players, Chris, said something that a lot of people say to me, they say, ‘Oh, I really miss the shopping days on the show,” Sajak told his cohost, Vanna White. Before Wheel of Fortune swapped out the segment in 1987, contestants could spend their prize money on a rotating selection of items that were displayed on a spinning stage.

“You think, in retrospect, ‘Oh, that was kind of fun,’ but, really, it was this thing going around with the [contestant’s] head in a circle, and she’d be going, ‘I’ll have the table.’ It was really not exciting television,” Sajak added as the studio erupted in laughter. “We like it just the way it is.”

After admitting he doesn’t miss the shopping rounds, Sajak asked White if she feels the same. “I don’t [miss them],” she replied. “It’s so much better now.”

This isn’t the first time Sajak has opened up about his least favorite Wheel of Fortune segment. In the early 2000s, when he had a website titled PatSajak.com, the host answered fan questions through the site’s “Ask Pat” page, where he revealed his disdain for the Megaword category and assured fans he would not be bringing back shopping. “Trust me, it was the most boring two minutes in television as shoppers hemmed and hawed over whether they wanted the dining room table or the floor lamp,” he replied, per Fandom.

Wheel of Fortune sans shopping segment airs weeknights at 8/7c on ABC.
